Yosemite Trip

We are planning a backpacking trip to the Yosemite back country in July. The planned dates for the hike itself are the 13th through the 17th  (Monday through Friday). I would like to bring a total of 8 to 12 hikers along, and I am looking for people who would like to take part.

The hike will start at Tuolumne Meadows (8500 ft.), proceed up to Vogelsang (11,000 ft.), and end up in Yosemite Valley (4800 ft.). On Thursday, we will hike from our overnight camping spot in Little Yosemite Valley to Half Dome, and then return to Little Yosemite Valley for a second night.

As you can see, we will be doing some serious climbing the first day, at altitudes much higher than most of us frequent. Therefore, I very strongly recommend that you plan on two full days at altitude to acclimate as much as possible. It is close to 400 miles to Tuolumne Meadows from Murrieta, so you should plan to start driving up on Friday morning, or at the latest starting Friday evening with an overnight stay somewhere along 395. We will try and arrange carpooling as much as possible to save gas.

We did part of this hike last summer, and the views are incredible. Click on the slideshow link on the left for a large sample.

This hike will be strenuous, and will require conditioning and commitment. I will be planning a number of group training hikes before the trip to help everyone get ready. Anyone in reasonable health should be able to train sufficiently to make this hike. If you have been looking for a good reason to get in better shape, I can’t think of a better one than hiking in Yosemite!

My wife will be coming along on the trip to act as our “Base Camp Coordinator”. If you think this hike would be great fun (which it will be), but your significant other thinks that sitting in a quiet campsite and reading a book would be even better, they are welcome to join the base camp group for the duration of the hike.

If you are interested in coming along, or just in getting more information (no obligation, of course), please join our Forum. You will be able to read posts from me and other Forum members, and you can post any questions you may have.
